AGRARIAN TRANSITION AND OPPORTUNITY WINDOWS FOR AGROECOLOGICAL INNOVATION

INTRODUCTION TO LAND USE INTENSIFICATION IN LAOS

It's recommended to complete the online course " Agrarian System Analysis and Diagnosis" by Malyne Neang before to follow this module.

  1. Explaining farmers' land use decision making in different contexts
  2. Reading and anticipating trajectories of land use change.
In the previous module, you have acquired knowledge on the main geographical, environmental and agricultural characteristics of the two studied regions ( Sayabouri and Xieng Khouang Province). You have also discovered how CA has been promoted as a way to control soil fertility depletion associated with land use intensification.

Looking specifically at the 'boom' recorded in maize production in the 2000s, we will show, in this second module, how agricultural expansion and land use intensification have occurred in Laos:

What have been the consequences for farming systems and practices?

What have been the impacts on rural landscapes?
